The short version
We hold very little. We never see your email address or your password — signing in is handled by JTS Accounts, and all this site gets back is an account number, a username and a picture. We never see your card, because Stripe takes the payment.
There is no advertising here, no analytics, and no tracking. The only cookie is the one that keeps you signed in, and your theme choice is kept in your own browser rather than sent to us.
If you have a profile here
This is the part that matters most, because a profile can exist without you ever having visited the site.
We publish a debater's public name, the public debates they have taken part in, a picture from their own public channel, and our opinion of how they argued. The basis for holding it is our legitimate interest in publishing commentary on public debate, weighed against the privacy of the person — which is why it is limited to their public debating activity and nothing else. We do not publish home addresses, private life, health, politics beyond the positions argued on camera, or anything about anybody who is not a public participant in these debates.
You can object. If you are profiled here and you tell us to stop, we take the profile offline while we consider it, and we will not keep it up simply because we are allowed to. The corrections page is the route.
What we hold, and why
- Account details
- Your JTS account number, username and profile picture reference, cached here so pages can show who you are. Basis: performing the service you asked for. Kept while the account exists.
- Sign-in session
- One cookie, so you stay signed in between pages. Strictly necessary, which is why there is no banner asking you about it. It expires when the session ends.
- Backings
- The amount, the currency, the name you chose to display, your optional message, and Stripe's reference for the payment. The name and message are public; the rest is not. Basis: performing the transaction, and the legal obligation to keep payment records. Kept as long as accounting law requires, which is years rather than months — this is why a profile that has taken backing cannot be deleted.
- Suggestions
- If you suggest a debater or a debate, what you typed and, if you were signed in, your account number. No IP address is stored with it. Basis: legitimate interest in knowing who readers want covered. Kept until the team has dealt with it, and afterwards so repeated suggestions can be recognised; ask and we delete it.
- Claim requests
- If you ask to claim a profile, what you sent us to show it is you, and the team's note on the decision. Basis: legitimate interest in not letting people claim somebody else's profile. Kept while the claim stands.
- Abuse limits
- Your IP address against an action, so the same connection cannot submit a thousand debates an hour. Basis: legitimate interest in keeping the site usable. Deleted after 24 hours.
- Staff actions
- What staff did to a profile and why, including a copy of a profile taken before it is deleted. Basis: legitimate interest in being able to account for our own editorial decisions. Kept indefinitely, because the point of it is to outlast the thing it describes.
- Server logs
- Ordinary web server records of requests, kept short-term for security and debugging.
Who else sees it
- JTS Accounts — handles sign-in. It holds your email and password; this site does not.
- Stripe — takes payments and holds the card details we never receive. Stripe is its own controller for what it collects.
- Our hosting and network providers — who necessarily carry the traffic and store the database.
- YouTube — see below.
We do not sell anything to anybody, and we do not share data for advertising. If we are ever legally compelled to hand something over, we will say so where we are allowed to.
Embedded video
Debate pages embed YouTube's player through youtube-nocookie.com, which is the mode that does not set tracking cookies simply for appearing on the page.
Once you press play, you are talking to YouTube, and Google's own terms and privacy policy apply to that. We have no visibility into it and no control over it. If you would rather not, do not press play — the rest of the page works without it.
Your rights
If the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies to you, you can ask for: a copy of what we hold, a correction, deletion, a restriction on what we do with it, a portable copy, and you can object to processing we base on legitimate interests — which includes a profile.
Exercising any of these costs nothing and does not require a reason. We aim to answer within 14 days.
If you are not satisfied with how we handle it, you can complain to the data protection authority in the country you live in. You do not have to come to us first.
Children
This site is not aimed at children and accounts are not intended for them. If you believe a child's data is here, tell us and it comes out.
